Immersion Project: Cambodia's Day Time!!! attack!! - part 1

In my trip to the Ummatic week that been held on March I have a very fun moment because before this I just walk by and do not ask them a question, do not wear their clothes and do not taste their water and also cookies but this time, when I come I tried everything. I had a very fun moment there. To add, some of my foreigner friends also become the host of their house. This make me more happy. We have entered the house of China, Turki, Thailand, Filipina and India.

But the house that we are focusing on is Cambodia. This is because they are very friendly towards me and humble. We think that we are more close to them and moreover only they that can give us their precious time. The other house do not have people waiting there and some of them do not want to be interviewed for the sake of our assignment and blog. Maybe it is our fault that we cannot persuade them nicely and comtinuously. In Cambodia house, there are four persons that take in charge to guard there, they are Salmah, Yusoff, Ahmad and Simon. The three of them are Muslim but only Simon is Buddha. Actually he is not  IIUM students but he just come to help his friends in order to introduce Cambodia to Malaysia students. He is an excellent students and still studying at UTP( Universiti Teknologi Petronas)  and just 20 years old.

There we have been introduced their clothes, cookies, the states in Cambodia. We also been told about the percentage of Buddhist and Muslim there. I think this is the first time I know that in Cambodia  there are a lot of Muslim there for about 90% of them meanwhile  the Muslim there is about 10 milion people only. In Cambodia, the main religion is Buddhist and Islam become as the second religion. The most Malay in Cambodia been dwelled at Kampung  Champa and there is a lot of mosques there.

As been told from Salmah, when in Cambodia if they want to wear the traditional clothes they have to open their hijab and scarf. This is because when they wear the traditional clothes with scarf, everybody will look at her twice. So, she have never wear their traditional clothes. When she saw us wearing the traditional clothes, she looked really  happy because she never have the opportunity to wear the clothes. In Cambodia, the clothes for male is Krama. This  clothes can be used for daily used. It been used for normal people and because it is easy to use.

Meanwhile the famous temple in Cambodia is of course Angkor Wat.  At first, the temple is for Hinduism religion but after a great war it is been change to buddish religion by the “ raja” that is Siem reap.

The food of Cambodian is sweet based and the main food is rice just like Malaysia and their kind of cookies is also just like Malaysia but slightly different in making it.

As I remember, in my place most of Cambodia that come to our state, Pekan, Pahang know Bahasa Melayu really well. So they said that there is a village that is south of Cambodia named Kg Champa. Many of them can speak Bahasa Melayu very well. So, I ask all of them if any of them can speak Malay but there is one brother who was able to speak in Malay language that is Yusoff. This is because Yusoff taking Bahasa Melayu class in UIA. The rest of them cannot speak Malay.

So far, our interview session went very well for about 2 hours. After all I think this experience make me fresh and life.

class reflection: The competency in culture diversity

When we speak about multicultural counseling, a counselor need have the 'special' ability in order to handle this issues. .what is the special ability? needed by them???

A counselor  should be Culturally Competent, they should be able to free self from cultural conditioning of personal and professional training. For example, if a counselor is Malay and he should not impose his own values to other cultures. Don't make them as yours. they have their own values. 

Moreover counselor also need to understand and accept the legitimacy of alternative worldviews. different region possess a different law. the other way to be competent in cultural diversity, a counselor should begin the process of developing culturally appropriate intervention strategies in working with clients. they also need to trained their self to become aware of systemic force affecting both clients and self.

Journal:sebab kita kan satu Malaysia............

That a single member of "the" minority community can represent the whole. Not true!!

I absolutely agree with this statement this is because not all the people in the race behave as we see the other people in the culture. This is likely to be true because from my working experience I can see the customers are not all the same.

It is not true if we see that all Malays will behave politely or gently and they will be patient if they waiting for something. I used to work part time at my uncle’s restaurant and there is a lot of Malay , Chinese and also Indian. Even foreigners also will come to our stall. Mostly they are from Netherland and Australia. From my observation, some of the Malay customers sometimes do not have high level of patient because they love to ask us to make the order quickly and some of them also will treat us( waitress) like we do not have value. They will shout at us.

Meanwhile I can say that some of the Chinese customers have the courtesy and they understand us. They will wait for their order. I also sometimes will talk Chinese to them and they so impressed with me because I can say some of their language. They thought that I went to the primary Chinese school. That’s so funny..hehe

 While for the Indian they also very friendly and there is a time that I ask them whether they want to eat the ‘nasi” with meat dishes. Then I remember that Indian do not eat milk because of their culture. Immediately I ask forgiveness from them. They just smile and said to me that its ok.

Then we can see that we cannot make a judgmental for a people in the race. When we see one of the people from that race behave kind to us, we just set in mind that all the believers are the same and vice versa. Therefore we must bear in mind not to make a judgmental just from the surface but try to see in general and not to think inside the box. Therefore we have to respect others because we are 1 Malaysia

Immersion project: Indian Muslim

DAY: WEDNESDAY

I have interviewed my friends that have a pure blood of Indian race. the goal for this session is to know about Indian Muslim culture. Her father and mother is Indian Muslim.  I am very interested to know about their culture. 

Firstly, I asked about the culture in a family. She described, in traditional Indian culture,basically women really obey to the husband. Especially when they want to have meal, a wife needs to accompany the husband first. A wife cant eat at that time. What she needs to do is to serve a husband like a king. They also believe about “Feng Shui” if they want to move to new house, it is very important to know the right position of each room. If it located in wrong place, something unlucky and bad luck will happen soon. 

However, they are not practicing feng shui because, it is contradicting with Islamic views. 

I was very interested to know more, then I explore more about her own experienced about Indian culture. She talked about the experienced of her relatives during first puberty. In a first week of the puberty, the girls ONLY needs to stay at his own room. She was avoided and prohibited to meet a man. Even her own father or brothers, she can’t face, talk and meet them.

  We want to talk more, however she have a mid-term paper tomorrow. so we ended the session.

FEELING & REACTION:

I felt impressed with her experiences. Even her parents is come from Indian background, her family is pious and very religious. they really practiced the Islamic teaching as a way of life... 

Journal:madam.. madam...madam......

Today we have learnt about and there is a sub topic about need for change. The point is about most teachers do not have the multicultural awareness. I just remember last Sunday we have a program with DPLI students. I become the facilitator to this group which is one of them is Chinese. But I think I can adapt and be friend with that Chinese teacher because she is so friendly. She is an independent person because she does not like to be friend with one group until the end. Meaning that she can be friend with anyone regardless of her race and religion.

I was  admired her because she has travel to 7 countries in the world by herself and using her own money. I seat next to her and I have the chance to ask her about  the her job at the school. Actually, she is not really a real counsellor but because of her skill, aptitude and also interest, she has been appointed by her principle to become the part time counsellor at her school. She became the teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan at Port Dickson. The ratio of the school is 4:1:1 which is 4(Malay), 1( Indian) and 1( Chinese). She said at that school, the Chinese students always come to her everytime they had problem. Even after the recess time, they a little bit  too late to come to the class because they see her first and there  also so many complains about them from another teachers.

 The teachers there always scold them because they came late to the class and they ask the students where they go. So the students said that they go to counselling room. Immediately the teachers there will scold and ask them why you always go to the counselling room. Every time the class is start, some of you come late because of all of you go to that counselling room. Don’t all of you want to study? Then they said ‘ we also study in that counselling room what..”

So here we can see that there is no respect for another races because of they want to follow the rules and regulation. Actually teacher outside  should know the technique to approach the students and do not easily get mad because of unreasonable things

Journal: WHAT IS CROSS CULTURAL COUNSELING

Cross-cultural counseling occurs when the cultural heritage of the counselor and the client differ. culture include how we view the world, including values, beliefs, behaviors, and customs. The counselor must concern to the cultural differences in order to make counseling process become more effective. Counselors need to have competency in cross cultural in order to understand their own worldview and cultural heritage so that they do not impose their personal and cultural biases on their clients. We as a counselor need to work  hard to develop cultural knowledge of other societies, such as learning about common beliefs, food ways, parenting practices, and other social behaviors.

We also need to develop cultural sensitivity and awareness, recognizing that differences between cultures exist without applying judgments about those differences. As a counselor, we need to avoid from having prejudice and cultural bias in our client who have different culture from ourselves. We also cannot stereotype other culture. Worldview differences not only focus on cultural, racial, and national origin, but also with age, gender, acculturation, education, and many other factors.

In order to become culturally competent, the counselor must accept the legitimacy of others worldview. The counselor cannot feel prejudiced or bias to other cultural. The counselor also must begin the process of developing culturally appropriate intervention strategies in working with diverse clients.

so, it shows that culturally competent is very important because it make the counselor understand more about the clients. the clients also will feel comfortable because the counselor understand the client and did not put his or her judgment on the clients issue.
