Immersion Project: MALAYSIAN INDIANS

I really interested to know about Indian Culture more because I never being surrounded and imposed from this culture. So,now for my immersion project, I have someone to interview. Her nickname is Gogy and now is studying at IIUM in LLB. She is very friendly and talkatative.  Her character make me easy to interview

Malaysian Indians are Malaysians of Indian origin. Many are descendants from those who migrated from India during the British colonization of Malaya. Prior to this, Indians have been present in the Malayan archipelago at least since the period of the influential Indian Chola dynasty of the 11th century. Today, they form the third largest ethnic group in Malaysia after the Chinese and the Malay. Malaysian Indians constitute 8% of the Malaysian population.Despite this, they make up a disproportionately large percentage of Malaysia's professional workforce.

I had begin the interview with her background first.I asked her either she can easily mix with Malay or not?  She said that she is easily mix and be friend with Malay because since early age in a kindergarten , she makes a friend with Malay people. And even at primary and secondory she was studied not at vernacular school, but at Sekolah Kebangsaan. This past situation indicate that she did not have a difficulty with other cultures.

She also very excited tell me about her experience during PLKN. She said PLKN really tight her relationship towards other culture. Everybody have a extravaganza relationship!  In my opinion, this program really beneficial to integrate Malaysian citizen. Just imagine, before this you did not have any friend come from different background. However, when entered in this program, you can involve and be friend with them.

Next, we talk about Indian Cuisine. In order to know more, I brings my own laptop and surfing internet. This activity make me become more understand and know their food all about.

The contribution of the Indian community in Malaysian cuisine is enormous. Indian cuisine has had a strong influence on traditional Malay cuisine resulting in the popularity of curries in Malaysia. Indian restaurants are well received by Chinese and Malay Malaysians. They have become an important fixture in everyday Malaysian life and is the venue of choice for watching live English football matches. Mamak restaurants and stalls refer to eateries owned and staffed by Indian Muslims. The word 'Mamak' is sometimes erroneously used to describe any Indian restaurant.

Roti canai, nasi kandar and rojak pasembor are Indian dishes unique to Malaysia. Nasi kandar is sold exclusively in Indian Muslim restaurants and the sauce recipe is kept secret. Unlike Indian cuisine in the United Kingdom and other Western countries which tend to focus on North Indian cuisine, Indian cuisine in Malaysia is largely based on south Indian cuisine as the Indian diaspora here is overwhelmingly Tamil, although some northern dishes such as tandoorichicken and naan bread are common. Southern breakfast delicacies such as idli, vadai and thosai are common. The appam is a favourite breakfast dish in Tamil homes. Idiyappam is known as putu mayam in Malay and usually sold by mobile motorcycle vendors. The murukku is made to mark Deepavali or Christmas. Banana leaf rice meals with various meat dishes and condiments are served in restaurants during lunch and dinner and in Indian households during special occasions. Mutton is highly favoured and served as either varuval (dry curry) or peratal (thick curry). Fried bitter gourd, banana chips, papadam, rasam, yoghurt and pickels are the usual condiments. Deserts and sweets include payasam, halva, mysore pak, palgoa and ghee balls.

Basically,if she want something different, she went outside to eat. Because at IIUM, only have a cafe that sell all the mamak's menu.

then, we have a chit-chat at the language issues. She teach me about the basic sentence of Hindi .

  1. Hi>>Namastey!
  2. Good morning! >> Suprabhaat
  3. Good evening! >> Shubh sundhyaa
  4. Welcome! (to greet someone) >> Aapka swaagat hai
  5. How are you?>> Aap kaisey hain?
after that I find the information about the borrowing words....
Borrowings from Tamil include such everyday words as:.
TamilMalayEnglish
akkakakakelder sister
kadaikedaishop
kappalkapalship
muthumutiarapearl
vagaibagaikind

Immersion project: SARAWAK part 1

culture of sarawak people..
Last month, I have interview one of my friends who came from Sarawak. The reasons why I interview her is because i am really interested about her culture. Before this, she always talks about her people and culture in Sarawak. That’s why I’m become interested to choose her. I want to investigate about her culture and what make her culture differ from my culture. It’s very important for me to understand about other culture because it can help me a lot in multicultural counselling in the future. So, i tried to deal with her. She agreed to be interview by me.
A few days later, i had meet her at the cafe. I ask her to tell about her culture and people in the Sarawak. She shared a lot of story regarding Sarawak to me. She said there are a lots of ethnic group in the Sarawak and each of the ethnic have their own distinct language, culture and lifestyle. The major ethnic group on this land iban ethnic and she is one of them. and it followed by the Chinese, Bidayuh, Melanau and other native tribes of Sarawak.in term of religion, there are variety of religion that practiced by people in Sarawak for example Islam, Christianity, budha and animism. She said that iban people used to live in longhouses but she not live in the longhouse. Her family have moved to the city because her father works as a teacher at the city. After that, i asked her what is the famous food that representative Sarawak people. She said that iban people famous with food that they called tuak. She said tuak is a sweet rice that served during big celebrations and festive occasions.
Besides that, Sarawak also have a lots of festivals such as gawai dayak and gawai kenyalang. I asked her to explain about one of the festival. She said gawai dayak is also known as harvest festival.  they will celebrate this festival every year. This festival is related to their religious belief system. They believe that that ritual is connected with rice cultivation, and with the cycle of life.
after that, i found out that its very interesting to know about other people culture. She also really excited to told about the culture in Sarawak. We decide to meet again in another day in order to discuss more about her culture in Sarawak.

class reflection: GLBT & IMMIGRANTS

GLBT AND IMMIGRANTS

-all of these is a vulnerable group of people who are the minority that always involved in problems and need help.
-according to pyramid, each people have different roles and function for example
-immigrant- for example immigrant from Indonesia, some of them did not get permission, their children did not have right to get education and they also live in poor condition.
-GLBT- stand for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual. Gay is not our culture but we have been imposed by the society.

lately, we were covered with a news that a young and smart guy from Malaysia was openly declared married with a same gander.

as a counselor, what should you react from this case?? for me ( rusydiah) i am really confuse and considered in dilema if my clients is gay or lesbian; they want me to help them in order people can accept  their relationship.  Should i just ignored my own values which is based on Islamic thought or just being a counselor and separated within personal values and career??

ATTITUDES TOWARDS IMMIGRANTS

diversity visa- only selective people will get this. they are chosen in term of the education and many more. for example people from low education cannot get this diversity visa. USA introduced this method. white no longer become as majority.

I ( Norsiah )  just want to share a story about Indonesian workers in my village. they been hired by one of the villagers that doing the construction business. they actually illegal workers because they do not have permit to come here. for how many years they have to follow the contractor. they even cannot go out to the town because they afraid that they will be caught by police. some of them do not return to Indonesia for many years.

there is also an Indonesian who work for my uncle because his boss do not give the payment to him. he is the leader of the family and he has to give his family money. for 1 year he has to work with my uncle at night and in the evening he will do the construction work. he has to do all kind of works because he want to collect the money in order to go back his home town too.

there is also another story, I still remember during my primary school. one friend of mine in the village is a mix  family. her father is a Chinese meanwhile her mother is Indonesian but Islam. therefore they got married and have 2 daughters. the first daughter is my friend and the second is about 17 years old in this year. I still remember that her mother always run away from her home because she afraid she will get caught by the police. sometimes her mother will go at her friend's house for 1 week.

therefore she and her sister will rely fully to her father. until 20 years they have to live like that and now her mother was sent back to Indonesia.

Immersion Project: Cambodia’s day time!! Attack!! Part 2

This time I just want to say my opinion when we went to the UMMARIC WEEK  2012. This time around, I made an appointment with Shafiqah, my collegue to have a walk together. Honestly, I am not really excited to went to the Ummatic week but it just because of the immersion project. But then after we take a look a few of the house, I getting more excited because there are some of my friends from turkey, Filipina and also Thailand  take in charge of that house. So I am really excited because of them.

To add the excitement, we went to the Cambodia’s house and they really greet us warmly and full of smile. I feel so great because this is the time where we can learn Cambodia’s culture. At first, I think there is not much different with Malaysia’s culture but actually there was slightly different! First of all their main religion that is Buddha, their  traditional clothes where if a Muslim want to wear it, they has to take off their scarf, and there also has a village that has so many of dolphins. It became the first place in Cambodia if they want to see dolphin for example in our country, we have Terengganu that famous with turtle(penyu).

I also impressed with their relationship between Muslim and non- Muslim. They were really close together. Even their face is quite similar but actually one of them was Buddhist.

I still remember that we want to queue in order to buy an ice cream but there were so many students and also staffs want to buy that delicious ice-cream. Due to the time constraint, we cannot taste it on that time. So we just take a picture by wearing a traditional clothes from turkey. I really want to taste that ice cream because I saw it in one of the Korea’s game show. It looked really tasty! Actually that ice cream, the seller will demonstrate us to put the ice cream in a different way. I don’t know how to explain here but they make fun with the ice cream and those who bought it will really have fun.
So finally I feel really great because I can gain experience, new knowledge and of course I can add my pictures collection.. =)

Reflection: A TRIP TO HENREY GURNEY..

This day still memorable in my mind because it is very interesting for me, for the first time I able to enter to the Henry Gurney at Malacca. This is really my precious time because we the public cannot just entering that place without any valid reason and have official letter. We went there because we want to make a group support for those students. For your information, all the students that we conducting the group is on their final year there. Only how many months left, they will release from there. After that, they have to go back to their family. Actually, there was about 25 participants and 2 of them are Chinese. At first, I feel really scared and nervous because I feel curious what will happen when we conducting the support group. But after all, it was really touching and admirable.

Because of what? Because…. Eventhough they commit a mistake before but they still have desire to become successful like normal teenagers out there. I was really impressed to these 2 participants because she have the intention to become a counselor but she do not have the confidence in order to pursue her study to the higher level. Thus, I encourage her to still carry on with her intention to become a counselor after she has been released. The another one girl, her intention to become a successful businesswoman because she wanted to be a cook. She really loves to cook after all. Eventhough she studied in that Henry Gurney class but she still can obtained 7A’S in PMR.

Eventually I feel so grateful because I am here…thus in my perspective of counseling student, I think we should encourage her in order to achieve their ambition because everybody has right. I am really impressed with them because even they are ex-Henry Gurney but they still have ambition so we have to encourage them. To add, there has a lot of diversity in order to achieve what we want for example counselor because it is not only those who has a good or well background can be a counselor but even they come from the place that we not even expect, they still can be a successful one! Go girl power go!!!

Journal:Let's watch out!

this videos are really cool!

STOP QUARRELING..RESPECT OTHER'S..OTHERS WILL RESPECT YOU BACK!

Immersion Project: Cambodia's Day Time!!! attack!! - part 1

In my trip to the Ummatic week that been held on March I have a very fun moment because before this I just walk by and do not ask them a question, do not wear their clothes and do not taste their water and also cookies but this time, when I come I tried everything. I had a very fun moment there. To add, some of my foreigner friends also become the host of their house. This make me more happy. We have entered the house of China, Turki, Thailand, Filipina and India.

But the house that we are focusing on is Cambodia. This is because they are very friendly towards me and humble. We think that we are more close to them and moreover only they that can give us their precious time. The other house do not have people waiting there and some of them do not want to be interviewed for the sake of our assignment and blog. Maybe it is our fault that we cannot persuade them nicely and comtinuously. In Cambodia house, there are four persons that take in charge to guard there, they are Salmah, Yusoff, Ahmad and Simon. The three of them are Muslim but only Simon is Buddha. Actually he is not  IIUM students but he just come to help his friends in order to introduce Cambodia to Malaysia students. He is an excellent students and still studying at UTP( Universiti Teknologi Petronas)  and just 20 years old.

There we have been introduced their clothes, cookies, the states in Cambodia. We also been told about the percentage of Buddhist and Muslim there. I think this is the first time I know that in Cambodia  there are a lot of Muslim there for about 90% of them meanwhile  the Muslim there is about 10 milion people only. In Cambodia, the main religion is Buddhist and Islam become as the second religion. The most Malay in Cambodia been dwelled at Kampung  Champa and there is a lot of mosques there.

As been told from Salmah, when in Cambodia if they want to wear the traditional clothes they have to open their hijab and scarf. This is because when they wear the traditional clothes with scarf, everybody will look at her twice. So, she have never wear their traditional clothes. When she saw us wearing the traditional clothes, she looked really  happy because she never have the opportunity to wear the clothes. In Cambodia, the clothes for male is Krama. This  clothes can be used for daily used. It been used for normal people and because it is easy to use.

Meanwhile the famous temple in Cambodia is of course Angkor Wat.  At first, the temple is for Hinduism religion but after a great war it is been change to buddish religion by the “ raja” that is Siem reap.
The food of Cambodian is sweet based and the main food is rice just like Malaysia and their kind of cookies is also just like Malaysia but slightly different in making it.

As I remember, in my place most of Cambodia that come to our state, Pekan, Pahang know Bahasa Melayu really well. So they said that there is a village that is south of Cambodia named Kg Champa. Many of them can speak Bahasa Melayu very well. So, I ask all of them if any of them can speak Malay but there is one brother who was able to speak in Malay language that is Yusoff. This is because Yusoff taking Bahasa Melayu class in UIA. The rest of them cannot speak Malay.

So far, our interview session went very well for about 2 hours. After all I think this experience make me fresh and life.

class reflection: The competency in culture diversity

When we speak about multicultural counseling, a counselor need have the 'special' ability in order to handle this issues. .what is the special ability? needed by them???
A counselor  should be Culturally Competent, they should be able to free self from cultural conditioning of personal and professional training. For example, if a counselor is Malay and he should not impose his own values to other cultures. Don't make them as yours. they have their own values.
Moreover counselor also need to understand and accept the legitimacy of alternative worldviews. different region possess a different law. the other way to be competent in cultural diversity, a counselor should begin the process of developing culturally appropriate intervention strategies in working with clients. they also need to trained their self to become aware of systemic force affecting both clients and self.

Journal:sebab kita kan satu Malaysia............

That a single member of "the" minority community can represent the whole. Not true!!

I absolutely agree with this statement this is because not all the people in the race behave as we see the other people in the culture. This is likely to be true because from my working experience I can see the customers are not all the same.

It is not true if we see that all Malays will behave politely or gently and they will be patient if they waiting for something. I used to work part time at my uncle’s restaurant and there is a lot of Malay , Chinese and also Indian. Even foreigners also will come to our stall. Mostly they are from Netherland and Australia. From my observation, some of the Malay customers sometimes do not have high level of patient because they love to ask us to make the order quickly and some of them also will treat us( waitress) like we do not have value. They will shout at us.

Meanwhile I can say that some of the Chinese customers have the courtesy and they understand us. They will wait for their order. I also sometimes will talk Chinese to them and they so impressed with me because I can say some of their language. They thought that I went to the primary Chinese school. That’s so funny..hehe

While for the Indian they also very friendly and there is a time that I ask them whether they want to eat the ‘nasi” with meat dishes. Then I remember that Indian do not eat milk because of their culture. Immediately I ask forgiveness from them. They just smile and said to me that its ok.

Then we can see that we cannot make a judgmental for a people in the race. When we see one of the people from that race behave kind to us, we just set in mind that all the believers are the same and vice versa. Therefore we must bear in mind not to make a judgmental just from the surface but try to see in general and not to think inside the box. Therefore we have to respect others because we are 1 Malaysia
umm... delicious...=)

Immersion project: Indian Muslim

DATE: 7/3/2012
DAY: WEDNESDAY
TIME:2100
I have interviewed my friends that have a pure blood of Indian race. the goal for this session is to know about Indian Muslim culture. Her father and mother is Indian Muslim.  I am very interested to know about their culture.

Firstly, I asked about the culture in a family. She described, in traditional Indian culture, basically women really obey to the husband. Especially when they want to have meal, a wife needs to accompany the husband first. A wife cant eat at that time. What she needs to do is to serve a husband like a king. They also believe about “Feng Shui” if they want to move to new house, it is very important to know the right position of each room. If it located in wrong place, something unlucky and bad luck will happen soon.

However, they are not practicing feng shui because, it is contradicting with Islamic views.

I was very interested to know more, then I explore more about her own experienced about Indian culture. She talked about the experienced of her relatives during first puberty. In a first week of the puberty, the girls ONLY needs to stay at his own room. She was avoided and prohibited to meet a man. Even her own father or brothers, she can’t face, talk and meet them.

We want to talk more, however she have a mid-term paper tomorrow. so we ended the session.

FEELING & REACTION:

I felt impressed with her experiences. Even her parents is come from Indian background, her family is pious and very religious. they really practiced the Islamic teaching as a way of life...

Journal:madam.. madam...madam......

Today we have learnt about and there is a sub topic about need for change. The point is about most teachers do not have the multicultural awareness. I just remember last Sunday we have a program with DPLI students. I become the facilitator to this group which is one of them is Chinese. But I think I can adapt and be friend with that Chinese teacher because she is so friendly. She is an independent person because she does not like to be friend with one group until the end. Meaning that she can be friend with anyone regardless of her race and religion.

I was  admired her because she has travel to 7 countries in the world by herself and using her own money. I seat next to her and I have the chance to ask her about  the her job at the school. Actually, she is not really a real counsellor but because of her skill, aptitude and also interest, she has been appointed by her principle to become the part time counsellor at her school. She became the teacher at Sekolah Kebangsaan at Port Dickson. The ratio of the school is 4:1:1 which is 4(Malay), 1( Indian) and 1( Chinese). She said at that school, the Chinese students always come to her everytime they had problem. Even after the recess time, they a little bit  too late to come to the class because they see her first and there  also so many complains about them from another teachers.

The teachers there always scold them because they came late to the class and they ask the students where they go. So the students said that they go to counselling room. Immediately the teachers there will scold and ask them why you always go to the counselling room. Every time the class is start, some of you come late because of all of you go to that counselling room. Don’t all of you want to study? Then they said ‘ we also study in that counselling room what..”

So here we can see that there is no respect for another races because of they want to follow the rules and regulation. Actually teacher outside  should know the technique to approach the students and do not easily get mad because of unreasonable things

Journal: WHAT IS CROSS CULTURAL COUNSELING

Cross-cultural counseling occurs when the cultural heritage of the counselor and the client differ. culture include how we view the world, including values, beliefs, behaviors, and customs. The counselor must concern to the cultural differences in order to make counseling process become more effective. Counselors need to have competency in cross cultural in order to understand their own worldview and cultural heritage so that they do not impose their personal and cultural biases on their clients. We as a counselor need to work  hard to develop cultural knowledge of other societies, such as learning about common beliefs, food ways, parenting practices, and other social behaviors.
We also need to develop cultural sensitivity and awareness, recognizing that differences between cultures exist without applying judgments about those differences. As a counselor, we need to avoid from having prejudice and cultural bias in our client who have different culture from ourselves. We also cannot stereotype other culture. Worldview differences not only focus on cultural, racial, and national origin, but also with age, gender, acculturation, education, and many other factors.
In order to become culturally competent, the counselor must accept the legitimacy of others worldview. The counselor cannot feel prejudiced or bias to other cultural. The counselor also must begin the process of developing culturally appropriate intervention strategies in working with diverse clients.
so, it shows that culturally competent is very important because it make the counselor understand more about the clients. the clients also will feel comfortable because the counselor understand the client and did not put his or her judgment on the clients issue.

Journal:Malaysian culture

Malaysian cultures

That day I learnt about malaysian culture and all of the students were very actively participated. This topic is quite interesting because either we agree or not with our culture and what is the impact to the counselor. Once again I have thought about Malay people that really want to takecare our own relationship with others. We do not want something happen that will ruin the good relationship in a blink of an eye for example me myself, I prefer to not say something bad anything about my friend, I will cover thier aib, I prefer to make my friend happy rather than sad and I willing to do everything that i can for her. Once again, all of the statements that we discussed in the class was truly relate the malay culture. That is my opinion.

Another example is my mother. She is a nice woman towards all of the guests that came to our house. Although she is very busy with her work to do all kinds of cookies but she still entertains the guest by preparing them food and drinks even the guest is our neighbour, relatives and villagers, that really impressed me. She will smile to them with all her heart. Whenever we had a ceremony like thanksgiving or makan-makan with  other family or my uncles and aunties, she will spend  a lot of money in order to prepare them food and dishes. She will not let the entire guests go back to thier home with hungry stomach...
